Knowing Zip Read online

“You’ve been told.” Vapor rumbled, a glint in his humanlike eyes.

  “You have been told also,” Mira countered.

  The females moved toward Arsenal. Their coordinated retreat was a glaringly obvious attempt to give Zip and Ryssa some much-appreciated privacy.

  The warriors glanced at Zip, shrugged, and followed their females.

  Zip grinned at Ryssa. “We’ve been told.” He clasped her hand. “Let me show you around our new home.”

  “I hope to see a certain sexy warrior’s chamber on this tour.” Now that her nervousness over meeting his brethren, the females, and their offspring had eased, her need for Zip was spiraling upward. “You promised me fast.”

  “Fast first.” He swung her into his arms and strode forward, carrying her, his eagerness adorable. “Then slow, very, very slow.”

  She kicked her feet, her heart light. “I love you, my male.”

  “I love you, my female.” Zip’s speed increased.

  The first tour would be fast also. Ryssa laughed.

  I often share exclusive, never-before-seen, never-will-be-seen-again updates about characters in my monthly newsletter (You can sign up for my newsletter here - http://tasteofcyn.com/2014/05/28/newsletter/ ). The following update is a favorite and some reading buddies have asked me to include it with this year’s short story.

  This update occurred soon after Jumping Barrel’s story released. Red was newly manufactured, not the fully functional warrior he is right now.

  A New Addition To Earth Minor

  Green perused the images sourced from all over the universe. None of the plants looked like Windy. “There are no visual matches.” She was truly one of a kind.

  “Intrepid was certain his was a match.” Zip, one of Green’s closest friends, had joined him on the search for Windy’s male.

  “His vision system must be malfunctioning.” Green shook his head. “His plant’s petals were a full shade darker.”

  “I’ll tell him that.” Zip grinned. “It will increase the probability that the next mock battle is fought on Earth Minor.”

  “Vapor would approve of that decision.” Green chuckled. All of the cyborgs stationed on the small planet would enjoy it. Fighting pleased their design. “We have to discuss expanding the north field.” The population of Earth Minor was rapidly increasing, Vapor and his female having claimed many more offspring orphaned by war. “But I must check on my female first.”

  “It has been a few moments,” Zip mumbled.

  Green ignored his friend’s sarcastic comment and walked in the direction of Windy’s field. His female had been visiting their plant three times a planet rotation since the hugging incident, ensuring Windy hadn’t been permanently damaged by Ka-Na’s too-enthusiastic embrace.

  He spotted his female kneeling in the dirt, a wide-brimmed head covering shielding her beautiful face from the bright sun, and his big cyborg heart filled with love. She didn’t care that her ancient Earth garment was dirtied by the contact with the soil. His female was part of the terrain as Windy was.

  He was a fortunate warrior.

  His female wasn’t alone.

  Red, Vapor and his female’s newest offspring, marched around the perimeter, a wooden gun in his hands, a scowl on his almost-human face. The little cyborg insisted he had enough planet rotations to take on a mission. Vapor had assigned him to Windy Watch, a task the young male took very seriously. Red had been fascinated by the plant since the planet rotation he was manufactured.

  “Warrior, report,” Green barked.

  His female glanced upward and gave him a world-tilting smile.

  “There was one attempted hugging, sir.” Red straightened, the top of his head not yet reaching Green’s stomach. “I blocked it.”

  Green inwardly braced himself. The last block had resulted in emotional damage to the attempted hugger. “How did you block it, warrior?”

  Red’s gaze shifted to the left. “I allowed Ka-Na…my opponent to hug me instead.”

  Green smothered a grin. That must have been mortifying for Red. The newly manufactured cyborg was determined to be viewed as a fierce warrior, like his father. “Sometimes a warrior must take a projectile to his form to complete his mission.”

  “Yes, sir.” Red’s chin lifted. “The damage was minimal.”

  “Take a shift to repair.” Green wanted to be alone with his female.

  “Yes, sir.” The little cyborg stomped toward the main domicile.

  “He likes it when Ka-Na hugs him.” Green’s female observed, gazing down at the ground.

  “He will never admit to that.” Green drew nearer. “Is something wrong with Windy?”

  “Look at this.” She pointed to a shoot.

  “It’s infringing on Windy’s territory.” He glared at the offending plant. “End its lifespan.”

  “I thought, at first, it was an intruder also.” She removed a twig from the soil, tossed it to the side. “But then I tested it. It isn’t an intruder.”

  He kneeled beside her. “What is it?”

  “A stolon.”

  He gazed at her blankly, not knowing what that meant.

  “Windy’s offspring,” she clarified.

  Windy’s offspring. Windy’s. Offspring. Green stared at the tiny strip of green. He hadn’t been able to find a mate for their plant, had thought she would be all alone forever, as he once thought he’d be. Now… “We’re having offspring?”

  His female smiled. “We’re having offspring.”

  “We’re having offspring!” Green yelled his joy into the sky, pulled his female onto his lap, knocked her head covering backward and bombarded her smiling face with kisses.

  “We are.” She kissed him back.

  “We are expanding the perimeter, adding more guards.” No one would harm the shoot.

  His female laughed.
